West Virginia is the only state in the nation located entirely within the Appalachian Mountain range. The unique position of West Virginia means that it is often included in a wide variety of geographical regions, including the southeast and north. The capital and largest city is Charleston. The Charleston metropolitan area consists of five counties in West Virginia, anchored by the city of Charleston. It is the largest metropolitan area in the state. Huntington, Parkersburg, Morgantown and Wheeling are a few of the larger cities.
