Rhode Island is the smallest U.S. state and borders Connecticut and Massachusetts. Its nickname is "The Ocean State", as nearly one tenth of Rhode Island's inland area is covered by salt water. In addition, no resident of the state is more than a thirty-minute drive from the water's edge. Providence is the capital and the most populous city of the state, and one of the first cities established in the United States. It is the estimated third-largest city in the New England region. There are 39 cities and towns in Rhode Island, its major population centers are: Providence, Warwick, Cranston, Pawtucket, East Providence, Woonsocket and Newport.
