Michigan is the eighth most populous state in the United States. It has the longest freshwater shoreline of any political subdivision in the world, being bounded by four of the five Great Lakes. Michigan is the only state to consist entirely of two peninsulas. The metro Detroit area, is located in southeast Michigan centered on the city of Detroit. As the home of the "Big Three" american automakers, it is the world's traditional automotive center and a key pillar of the U.S. economy. The largest municipalities in Michigan are: Detroit, Grand Rapids, Warren, Sterling Height and Ann Arbor.
