Hawaii was admitted to the Union in 1959, making it the 50th state and also the last state to be admitted. Hawaii has an estimated population of 1,275,194. The center of population of Hawaii is located directly between the two islands of Oʻahu and Molokaʻi. The state encompasses nearly the entire volcanic Hawaiian Island chain, which comprises hundreds of islands spread over 1,500 miles. Honolulu is now the state capital and largest city. The previous capital was Lahaina, Maui. Some major towns are Hilo, Kāneʻohe, Kailua, Pearl City, Waipahu, Kahului, Kailua-Kona, Kīhei, and Līhuʻe.
