Racial and Ethnic Distribution
Racial and ethnic minorities accounted for 20 percent of all cosmetic procedures in 2005. Hispanics again led minority racial and ethnic groups in the number of procedures: Hispanics, 9 percent; African-Americans, 6 percent; Asians, 4 percent; and other non-Caucasians, 1 percent.
Location and Fees
Just over forty-eight percent (48.3 percent) of cosmetic procedures in 2005 were performed in office-based facilities; 27.9 percent in freestanding surgicenters; and 23.8 percent in hospitals. Americans spent just under $12.4 billion on cosmetic procedures; $8.2 billion was for surgical procedures, and $4.2 billion was for nonsurgical procedures.
Breast Surgery Statistics
- Up to 35% of women claim that their breasts cause them some form of discomfort

Eyelid surgery stats
- In 2004, over 290,000 eyelid surgeries were performed in the United States
- Cosmetic eyelid surgery is the third most popular plastic surgery following liposuction and breast augmentation
- Although women make up the overwhelming majority of eyelid surgeries at 85%, it is the second most popular procedure for men overall
- 41.9 percent of all eyelid surgeries performed in America in 2004 were on people 51 to 64 years of age.
Facelift stats
- 157,061 people received facelifts in 2004
- Women made up 92% of all facelift procedures, or 145,240 operations
- Facelifts are the fifth most popular cosmetic procedure, ahead of tummy tucks but below nose jobs
- 57% of all facelifts are performed on people between 51 and 64 years of age.
Chemical Peel stats
- 1,110,401 chemical peels were performed in the United States in 2004
- Chemical peels are the third most popular type of cosmetic procedure performed
- 88% of all chemical peels were performed on women
- People between the ages of 35 and 65 are most likely to get chemical peels (64%)
Cellulite treatment stats
- 90% of women will suffer from cellulite at some point in their lives
- 81,673 people sought treatment for their cellulite in 2004
- Women made up 99.1% of all cellulite treatments in 2004
- More than half the number of people who received treatment for cellulite were between the ages of 35 and 50
Tummy Tuck Stats
- 150,987 abdominoplasties were performed in the U.S. in 2004
- 58.4% of all tummy tucks performed were for people between the ages of 35 and 50
- Women accounted for 96.2% of all tummy tucks performed in the United States in 2004
- Tummy tucks were the 6th most popular plastic surgery, ahead of breast reduction but below face lifts
Men will represent a growing segment of the aesthetic surgery market.
