There ARE options:
- Hair Transplant Surgery
- Follicular Unit
- Trichophytic Closure
Hair transplant surgery is more common than many people think and is considered to be the only permanent solution for hair loss. The procedure, Follicular Unit Transplant, is moving (transplanting) a strip of healthy growing hair follicles from a donor to an area where the baldness is and the healthy follicles will now grow. It is much like re-potting a plant. There is a period of regeneration after the procedure and the new hair growth begins as soon as 3-5 months after surgery. Many cases may only need one procedure for optimal results and may take up to ten hours in surgery.
Interestingly, many people don’t know that hair transplant surgery can also be used for eyelashes, eyebrows, beards and other areas of the body that may have been scarred.
The Trichophytic Closure is a fairly new technique that is used to cover up the scar on the “donors” scalp when closing the incision. Basically, it is the way that the doctors closes the incision that can cause virtually no scarring and makes it blend with the rest of the hair.
If surgery is not for you, there are alternative options that you may consider exploring.
- Non-Surgical Hair Loss Treatments
- Medication
- Laser
Propecia and Rogaine are medications that have proven to maintain or increase hair over a long period of time with continued use. Maximum benefits are for younger candidates with thinning hair and will not cure total baldness. Side effects are minimal and these products can be used on both men and women.
Laser therapy for hair regeneration is another alternative. The low level laser light that is the red light that has been used for decades to stimulate cell growth and help to heal wounds, burns and lessen scarring. This cool laser light technique is approved for use and can be used in conjunction with Propecia or Rogaine; however, the long term results have not been proven and many treatments are necessary for results.
As you can see, there are options out there for you if you are dealing with hair loss, balding or want to take preventative measures. Every person and situation is different, therefore, if you are considering some form of treatment, consult with a board certified hair loss specialist or cosmetic surgeon to discuss your personal case. You can then make an educated decision on what is best for you.
