According to a press release dated September 2008, the ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons) "For many patients—even the very fit ones, such as an aerobics instructor—the upper to mid-line back where the rolls and bulges form was very frustrating," said senior author Joseph Hunstad, MD and ASPS Member Surgeon. "This redundancy of skin occurs generally from aging and cannot be exercised away. For those who desire to wear form-fitting outfits, this procedure eliminates the problem."
This procedure takes one hour or less. A general anesthetic is administered and the fat rolls are literally cut off, and skin is sewn back together. This is NOT eliminating fat, only liposuction removes fat and fat cells. This is an alternative to remove the excess skin that is exceptionally difficult to exercise off for some. There is minor scarring from this procedure; however, the stitches are placed in the bra line of the patient. Therefore, they will be camouflaged by a bra or bathing suit.
The bra-line back lift has been found to be a safe and effective (however, still very new) method for instant results and renewed self-esteem in patients. Risks are minor, such as bleeding, infection and anesthesia related risks. There will be swelling and moderate bruising post op, however, within two weeks a patient can start back into their daily activities and routines, within reason.
Studies from the ASPS have shown that more than 17,000 lower back lifts were performed in 2008 alone. Could this be the sequel to the tummy tuck and / or lower back lift?
I sit on the fence with this topic. Pending on the nature of the case involved, for instance if someone has lost an incredible amount of weight or has undergone bariatric procedures for weight loss, I can understand the necessity for removal of that unwanted skin.
In regards to today’s fashion and women’s burning desire to have the perfect body; I can understand how and why this procedure came to fruition. What woman hasn’t a day where you felt fat, bloated or like a beached whale and wished for that magical quick fix? Additionally, I do understand that bodies change over time, and we are not all able to have personal trainers and chefs keeping us in line and making our bodies ‘red carpet ready’. But, is this pushing the limits? After all, we are human…no - - body is perfect or even symmetrical. Where do we draw the line?
