2+ million people annually have some form of cosmetic surgery in the United States alone! Botulinum toxin is a medication and a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, otherwise known as botulism. Botox is the name it is sold as commercially.
Below is some interesting data I found in a CNN article dated April 15,2002.
- The FDA approves Botox:
- 1989 to treat eye muscle disorders
- 2000 to treat cervical dystonia (neurological disorder)
- 2002 used in minute doses, to smooth wrinkles
Botox is not new to the industry and has also been proven to help and alleviate excessive sweating, post-stroke spasticity, back spasms and migraine headaches.
Understandably, many people can be turned off when they learn of the the medical make-up of this product and the fact that it smoothes wrinkles by blocking nerve impulses temporarily and paralyzing muscles. However, there is more than enough data to show positive results with patients who continue to use this product regularly.
With proper research to find a board certified doctor as well as having all of your pre-procedure questions answered whether it be cost, risks or recovery time; minor side effects such as headache or bruising seem to be most common. I believe this may be an alternative for anyone male or female who is leary about any invasive procedure and I’m certainly considering it in the future.
